Scope & Content |
This collection consists of personal correspondence and business papers of James Lynch Montgomery (generally referred to as Lynch) from 1860-1902. They are arranged chronologically in two series, namely: Personal Correspondence (1860-1902) and Business Documents (1885-1902). The personal correspondence includes letters received by Lynch from various family members. Most of the material dates from 1885 to 1892 and includes the period when Lynch's family was in Europe (1885-1887) and after they returned to the US (1887-1892). Frequent correspondents include Lynch's mother Margaret Augusta Lynch Montgomery and his siblings Janet Tillotson (Nettie) Edward Livingston (Eddie), Sophia Elizabeth (Sophie), Adelaide Henrietta (Addie), Elizabeth Philips Montgomery (Bessie), Henry Eglinton (Harry), and Hardman Philips (Alan). Also included are letters from Lynch's brother-in-law, Robert B. Suckley. The correspondence details the day-to-day activities of the Montgomery family while they were living in Switzerland and after they returned to New York and Rhinebeck. Of particular interest is the family's precarious financial situation while they were in Europe and their social activities and connections in Rhinebeck after their return. The business papers document Lynch's various business activities and include Lynch's business interests in mining claims in the Pacific Northwest, partcularly Idaho, Washington, and British Columbia, Canada. Many of the business records document the day-to-day activities and expenses of developing the mines including the price of labor and materials. Other mining records document the purchase and sale of mining stock and interests. |
