Small light gray notebook with "July, 1913" printed on cover. Provides two lined pages for each day of the month. Excerpts: June 1: The max. thermometer recorded 98 ½ which is the hottest I've observed at Wilderstein in my life. 2: 84° in my room at 7AM. / Cousin Brinka Montgomery left in the morning. Bessie took her to Pok. where she proceeded to N.Y. by train. / Ther. got up to about 86 today. It felt quite chilly in evening. / Pd. off quite a lot of bills with Rh [Rhinebeck] & Chath. [Chatham] checks. 5: To pier 57. Found Provence already some 10 min. in. H.E.M. 1st, 2nd and Peg in fine condition, very brown. Had good voyage. Loaned H.E.M. 50. They departed for 76th St. / Then went to Pier 58 to say goodbye to Dr. Saunders sailing at 10:30 on the Minnetonka. Gave him a box of 25 Cabanas Perfectos 7: Bkt - postum & watermelon; Lunch – potato & beets; Supper – none / Girls went swimming at Miller’s / Got out & used bike for 1st time this year. Cyclometer is at 218. / Jean Montgomery arr’d 5:24. / Pd. Violet Bramble one month to June 12th, 30. 11: Bkt – buttermilk; Lunch – ice cream; Supper – none. / Bght 100 N.Y.C.@95 3/8 / Hair cut at club / Home in 5:56. My telegram home did not bring a car to meet me. Telephoned from the station & soon Robbie & Edith Gracie arr’d with the Hup. / Norton Miller & a Sherman were at the house. They were all dancing, etc. till after 11:00. / In afternoon Vincent Astor came with Helen H. for tennis. 12: Rec’d from Wager, Ostrom’s release from further claims on acct. of the Packard running him down last winter. I paid him 1000. / Bike to Rhinebeck. Met & talked very amiably with Tracy./ Robbie & Jeanne played tennis at Huntington’s P.M. / Mrs. Olin & Eliz. L. played here. Kath. Miller, Norton, Sherman & Noble came also in P.M. 13: Robbie took Jeanne to Catholic Ch. at Pok. I went to Ch. with Edith, Mamma, Daisy, Kath. & Eliz. Rev. Mr. Brown conducted service. Piano used as organ is being repaired. We brought Rev. Mr. Brown home to lunch. He left in ferry 2:51. / Bessie with Edith, Daisy & Betty went to Merritts in P.M. Robbie took Jeanne to Tivoli. / After their return Daisy, in Ford, took Edith & Bettie to Olin’s. 14: Helen Huntington came In A.M. to play tennis with Jeanne. Vincent came later to watch. / All the family & the 2 guests Edith & Jeanne lunched chez Kittie Hamersley & played or watched tennis most of the afternoon arriving home at 7. / Robbie & Jeanne did not show up here until 11 having gone to Pok. for supper & some play. / Bkt.- watermelon; Lunch – none; Supper – light. 15: Miss Edith Temple Gracie left in 9:23. / Bkt. – postum & watermelon; Lunch – vegetables, light; Supper – tomato & peaches. / Daisy lunched & tennised at Huntington’s / Robbie left in 3:23 to go tonight to Bar Harbor with Norton Miller. / Laundress Violet Bramble left us. / Bike in P.M., 14,8 miles. Arr. home 3:45/ Weight at 6 P.M. 163 3/8; weight at bedtime 165 ½ / Miss Lizzie Gilpin arr. at 5:40. 16: Daisy & Jeanne left in 9:23 for Mantoloking / Kath. & I biked to Rh./ 2 ice cream soda, .20 / Newman & wife off to N.Y. for 2 day holiday. / Jeanne pd. me $10. which Wright had p’d on a C.O.D. package for her / Start on bike 4:10; home 6:06. 18: Kath., Eliz. & I took 12:30 to Pok., then by Washington Irving to N.Y. Hotel Belmont, rooms 740 & 742. / Met H.E.M. at R. Club. He came to dinner with the girls & me at Belmont. / I took the girls to Astor Theater to see "Quo Vadis" cinematographic . Very fine! 26: Nora Fitzgerald died today. / Kittie Hamersley, Mrs. Lowrie & a Mr. Van Rensallear came to dinner to meet Rev Mr. Bentley of the Holy Alliance, who had arrived at 5:40, to stay the night & preach tomorrow on trial. 27: Everybody much pleased with Mr. Bentley’s sermon on "The Sower" & general conduct of the service. / Kittie Hamersley & Mrs. L. took him to their home after church for lunch, dinner, etc. & he returned to N.Y. in the 8:40. 28: Bessie went to town in 9:23 to attend the funeral of Nora Fitzgerald / Gave Bessie 15. 30: Miss Lizzie Gilpin left in 9:26. / Very hot, over 90° & damp. |
