Notebook with brown cloth cover, trimmed with narrow band of red leather around the edge. Inside front and back covers are decorated in red, blue and beige wavy design. Pencil holder on side. Elastic strap for closure. Inside on first blank page, upper left: "No. 506 / R. B. Suckley / Chateau d'Oex." Contains instructions in code to HEM as to what stocks to buy and sell; notes letters received and sent; monies spent; sports activities (hiking, tennis, luging; chess, billiards) and who participated, concerts. Family travels in Switzerland, RBS some with Alioth for sports. Marie cares for the children (the girls as the boys are in school.) Mlle. Blum gives the girls lessons. Includes: Sept. 21, 1901 - "Laurier left for Lausanne where he is to take charge of the boys' [Henry and Robin] violin lessons." Oct. 9, 1901 - Boarded ship in Turin, stayed on board at Naples; Oct. 13, 1901 - Ship stopped at Gibraltar for mail and a few passengers. Oct. 22, 1901 - Docked in Brooklyn. Checked on Wilderstein; Aunt Phebe at the Homestead; Mansakenning - "House is charming." Oct. 30, 1901 - J. J. Astor agrees to buy Beekman Hill Farm Nov. 5, 1901 - Sailed, arriving Plymouth Nov. 12 Dec. 2, 1901 - Col. Hooper, Beauclerk, Sandeman and RBS organized the Chateau d'Oex Club Dec.11, 1901 - Doctor decides Margaret has measles June 28, 1902 - Cable from H.E.M. "Will you lease Wildercliff for term of years for repairs?" RBS responded: "Am willing to lease." March 9, 1903 - Laurier's address is 83 East 3rd Street, NYC. April 4, 1903 - After night in Paris, boarded the steamer Lorraine at Le Havre bound for New York. April 11 - Arrived. Met by Harry and Alan and went to Harry's at 331 West End Avenue. Visited Addie and Lynch at their apartment, 67th Street. May 2, 1903 - Steamer Vaterland headed out at 10 AM May 12 - Dropped anchor at Flushing, England. |
