Small light gray notebook with "December, 1910" printed on cover provides two lined pages for each day of the month. Cover also stamped "R. B. Suckley, / Rhinebeck, N.Y." RBS notes where he stays when in NYC - usually the Belmont Hotel. Dec. 3: I burned brush all day near the ice house. Dec. 5: Thermometer about 22 degrees all day. Had 2nd boiler started up. Dec. 8: Man with gasoline engine & circular saw arrived & sawed all day at the pile of wood. Doubtful if he finishes it tomorrow. Dec. 12: Gave Mr. Sauer, superintendent House of Rest, 20. for Xmas festivities at the House. Dec. 17: Took K & E [Katharine & Elizabeth] shopping at Wanamakers. Dec. 22: We are enclosing west half of kitchen piazza. Kitchen window to be a door, glass. / Montgomerys took K & E to skate on Morton Pond. Too much snow however. Dec. 24: All but I went to Xmas tree at Dows 4:30 to 6 p.m. in stable. Dec. 26: Lists money presents given: to his five children at home, 15. each [Montgomery in Europe.] To the Montgomery children, 5 each. To Wright, 50; McCarty, 10; Al Traver, 10; the four house servants, 5 each; Flynn, 5; Martin, 5; Newman, 10./ Christmas tree in afternoon. All H.E.M.s except Grace were present. Col. & Vincent Astor came. / Tea, tree, ice cream and cakes - last two at dining room table. Dec. 27: Gave Tremper, the free delivery postman, 5. / Bessie, the 3 girls & Arthur started at 9 p.m. in Packard for a dance at the Chapmans'. Robbie tried to follow them an hour later in the Ford but could not get it started. Dec. 31: Gave almost full box of Porto Rico segars to 5 or 6 plumbers who were working here. / Family all at A. Rogers, Hyde Park except Nummie, abroad, & I. |
