Six letters from George Suckley to Miss Rutsen prior to their marriage. .01 New York New York Sunday 19 Jan'ry [1794] George expresses his love for her and his strong religious beliefs. He thinks she will not come to New York until the river opens, but he hope she will give the pleasure of visiting her in Rhinebeck in six weeks or sooner. He hopes they can remain in contact by letter until they meet again. He has much to say to her but cannot permit at present. "My heart is grateful for all your many favors --" .02 New York 20 Febry 1794 He responds to her letter and confesses that he sent too many letters to her. He is leaving for Philadelphia. His friends say he is in love and he admits that his actions suggest that is true. He appreciates that she expresses her feelings and is unworthy of her encouragement and he has tried to avoid meetings and thinking of her and must leave it to God. .03 New York 28 May 1794 Mr. Garrettson has reported on the good health "of my most beloved & very Dear Friend and most of all that you are in spiritual Health." New York is attractive to him because she has been there. He continues for two more pages expressing his feelings for her. .04 New York 5 May 1795 He apologizes for not sending his picture sooner though he doesn't suppose it will give her pleasure. He has been in Philadelphia for work and thinks of her. Though his hopes are weakened "I am still most of my working moments dwelling on the thoughts of you." .05 Philadelphia 27 May 1799 Her letter gave him happiness as it puts his mind out of business as he looks forward to meeting her soon. To her he says; "I tell you my opinion, that Marriage is absolutely necessary for your Health..." ( A portion of the top of page 3 is missing) he mentions his late wife's housekeeper who would take care and trouble off her hands. |
