Forty-six letters, postcards and telegrams. [Letter #4] Feb. 6, 1916. Rhinebeck. Arthur goes to Wilderstein on weekends. In the city he goes to the apartment where Bessie and Daisy are staying three or four times a week for meals. "Our family is really too large to live together all the year and keep any individuality." [#6] May 3, 1916. Arthur has discussed with Murphy of Olin, Clarke and Phelps the possibility of keeping lots next to Suckley Park in New Jersey. [#20] Ap 16, 1917: "I saw several parades near the Herald Square building for the purpose of getting people to enlist." [#22] May 8, 1917: ARS suggests buying a second hand boat for $4000 to patrol the coast as part of The Mosquito Fleet and thus avoid being drafted. [#29] Aug. 29, 1917. Paris, France. Has just arrived after a 10 day voyage. [#33] Sept 1917. Paris: The government has almost finished militarizing the ambulance hospital at Neuilly. Arthur expects to work with the Red Cross as he is "unfit for military service" and "has a knowledge of foreign languages and people." [#34] Oct. 1, 1917. Paris. Arthur has been offered a paid job at the Farmers Loan and Trust Company. [#39] Nov. 12, 1917. Paris. Has broken his arm. [#42] Nov. 25, 1917. Paris. Arthur has a job at the Secours Duryea receiving people who solicit help for charitable organizations. [#44] Dec 5, 1917. Paris: "Gignoun lunched with me today & tells me that Koritza has just named a street in honour of Nummy. In a few weeks I shall have a photograph of it and shall send it on." [#45] Dec 21, 1917: The difficulties of dealing with women. "I believe in the English theory that the society of women should (in confidence) be limited to 1 or 2 hours a day. At least I find that amount pleasant & a greater amount bad for me." |
