Correspondence : Phebe Rutsen Bowne Hunt 1. [No Date] : Expresses wishes for Mary to come visit, talks about her studies of Grecian history. 2. [No Date] : tells of who had recently visited, health, Cousin Mary Lawrence to winter in Florence, gossip, her winter plans. Included with letter was a woman's photograph [PC04552 moved to photograph collection]. 3. [No Date] : Cousin Tom's injuries are not serious (a horse was injured and fell on him, he has no broken bones), she is staying with Tom and Kitty for two weeks (she feels they are spoiling her). 4. [No Date] : Tells about little Rutsen's good health and eating habits, her mother's health has improved, has read two volumes of Grecian history. 5. 12 November [No Year] : Her mother is very ill and confined to bed with pain, hot applications to her feet and side seem to help. With calling card and envelope "Dear Cousin Mary" from the Reverend and Mrs. Andrew Hunt. In small script at bottom of card it reads "Phebe Rutsen Bowne" 6. 18 April 1861 : Expresses desire to visit cousin Rutsen, but Tom didn't want to go. Spring has been damp and unpleasant, still snowing. She wishes for summer to come. Kitty's rheumatism is acting up. 7. 11 November 1863 : Tells Mary that if she is still going to go to Philadelphia, that she will gladly accompany here. She is lonely without visitors. With envelope. 8. 8 May 1866 : who has visited, complains about new minister's preaching not being as good as former preacher though he shows promise "to be very admirable in other aspects." 9. 11 June 1864: Eliza thanks Mary for gloves and hats. Cousin Rutsen has improved in health and looks since he came. Phebe and Carrie paid a call at Toms's; Kate and Kittie walked with them to visit Cousin Mary who rises early to work in her garden. 10. 26 [Dec]1866: Mother, who is very well, is delighted that Carrie and Phebe have returned home. They attended the Christmas festival at the Methodist Church. The church was full and the tree looks handsome. 11. 23 July 1867: Surprised that George should be anxious about Uncle as he seems as usual. It gave him pleasure to hear that Mary was coming to Rhinebeck. 12. 10 July 1868Phebe, Mr. Hunt, Cousin Mary and Mr. Harroner are went to take tea with Uncle who asked Mr. Hunt to pray before leaving. Mrs. Nott and her niece visited; Albert H. is there for a few days. Mr. & Mrs. Bishop are coming. Phebe's mother is very well. 13. 30 Nov. 1868Phebe ran over to see Kate before the latter left to spend the day with Phebe's mother. Cousin Mary is sewing. Her china has not yet arrived from Mrs. Barton. George was there twice looking well. Cousin Rutsen came over to have his hair cut and was full of his jokes. Mr. Williams took a great fancy to Mary [Suckley] and told Mr. Hunt he would like to call on her. 14. Dec. 1868The Homestead. The journey home was pleasant. They secured good seats though there was a crowd in the cars. At Poughkeepsie they met Bishop Janes and a friend on the way to Cousin Mary's. They all got in the awaiting sleigh. She records the comings and goings of the river neighbors. She has been at the Homestead three days with Mama. The house is as comfortable as it can be made with three gas burners going night and day. Cousin Rutsen takes his usual ride to the mountain whenever weather permits. 15. 6 Dec.1868 Mama seems happy to be in the home of her youth again. They had an old fashioned singing with even Cousin Rutsen joining in. Phebe thinks if he would hear a few good church sermons and music, he would love to go to church as much as he once did. She and Mr. Hunt plan to go to New York and would like to spend the first night with Mary after paying her respects to her good mother-in-law. 16. [1867] Tuesday.[June] Phebe announces her upcoming marriage to Mr. Hunt on Thursday, the 20th of this month. She hopes that Mary, Rutsen and George will be present 17. [1860] Tuesday morning. Announces the birth of a dear little girl at Wilderstein on Saturday. Mama and Carrie have been there for two weks. The doctor and Mrs. Brody came when sent for . The event coincided with a celebration - Mr. Kelly's house lit up, Romn candles at the dock, lanterns, a band, a response from the gentleman of the mansion. This in honor of his nomination as Governor. |
