Forty-five letters, postcards and telegrams. Arthur is in Paris, staying in hotels, enjoying the food and working in the health care field. From January through mid-May, many letters express concern about getting his draft status settled. [Letter #1] Jan 9, 1918: Decided to give up war relief and go into the Red Cross again--considered part of the Army. His work is to educate as to the dangers of tuberculosis. [#11] March 28, 1918. Hotel Vouillemont, Paris: Arthur's commission as second lieutenant in the Red Cross will be approved and he can immediately adopt the insignia. He wears the Sam Brown belt with a strap over the shoulder. [#22] June 1918. American Red Cross, Paris letterhead: "I am very busy just owing to the streams of refugees coming through Paris and the fact that we are transporting a great many temporarily disabled soldiers to points from hospitals near the front to points farther back." [#23] June 21, 1918. Paris. Robin sent a telegram that he wants some money, but no address. Arthur will make inquiries to find out which battalion he is in. [#27] Nov 11, 1918: "The city is very gay today as everyone is celebrating the armistice which was announced at 11 a.m." [#38] Aug. 20, 1919. Chateau d'Oex postmark. Arthur has been informed by the Serbian ligation that he will become a "Knight of the Royal Order of St. Sava of the 5th class." [#42] Sept. 24, 1919. Paris. Comments on strikes in the US and unskilled workmen demanding $1.00 an hour. [#44] Oct 30, 1919. Le Grand Hotel, Leysin, Switzerland letterhead.: Walked from Chateau D'Oex to Leysin, Suisse [#45] Dec. 1919. Telegram to RBS at Le Havre that he will meet him. |
