Notebook with black leather cover, with fold over flap. Smooth brown leather interior. Gilt edges. Pencil holder on inside. Almanac information for several pages at beginning. On Remembrancer page RBS has filled in address, Rhinebeck, N. Y.; telephone no. 18; business address, 42 Broadway; size of hat, 7 1/4; collars, 16; shoes, 42. During two months in Switzerland, RBS keeps up with his friends - Dobbs, Beauclerk, Reuss, Alioth. He notes trips to Les Avants for skiing; letters written and received; books read; games - bridge, poker. When in NYC, RBS stays at the Belmont Hotel or Harry Montgomery's house, 319 West 76th Street. Often eats at the Racquet Club. The children skate on Morton Pond; do "aquatic sports" in the cove. Notes train times when any family member travels to NYC. Records stocks bought and sold. Many days with no notation. Jan. 26, 1908 - Recorded the girls' weight: "Daisy, 136 ¼; Cath., 119; Eliz., 120" Jan. 28, 1908 - McCarty began as watchman Jan. 29, 1908 -Sailed on the Adriatic, White Star Line to Paris via Cherbourg. Feb. 7, 1908 - "Same old room at Rosat." Mar. 28, 1908 - Sailed from Le Havre for NY April 4, 1908 - Arrived NY. RBS and Bessie to Rhinebeck where they found Arthur who "had to give up school on account of his eyes. He must not read for six months." April 23, 1908 - "Went over Fox Hollow line with Colburn, Dows' superintendent. His map does not agree with my deed and map between power house and Finks." April 30, 1908 - "Arthur and I rowed new boat (14 ft. Mullens steel) home in p.m." June 2, 1908 - New chauffeur, Henry C. Furman; previous one, Beebe, left. July 7, 1908 - Furman left and new chauffeur [Newman] arrived. |
