Twenty letters from his wife to RBS at Chateau d'Oex and in America. Bessie is in Geneva with her daughters and Arthur for dental care. Arthur returns to La Colline as Bessie continues to seek cures and doctors for his health problems. [letter #14] Sept. 7. Bessie, Robin and Arthur arrive in America. [#15] Sept. 14. Bessie reports good conditions at Wilderstein and that the Dows' place is now laid out in extensive roads and several buildings. She saw Louis and Lena [Fitzgerald] when visiting Mansakenning. [#17] Sept. 24. Bessie and Addie travel to Cambridge to see the boys. Henry lives in Claverly hall at Harvard. [#18] Oct. 01. Bessie succeeds in getting Henry's room changed from first floor (too many temptations) to third. She and Addie decorate and furnish it. The women would like to live in Cambridge. [#19] Oct. 19. Robin and Arthur both seem happy at Exeter. [#20] Oct. 22. Bessie is glad that RBS and their daughters are settled in a nice pension in Freiburg and that the children are going to a good school. Harry and Grace have rented a furnished house in Yonkers for the winter. Since she and Addie were in Cambridge they could not attend Margaret Chanler's wedding to Mr. Aldrich at Rokeby. |
