Small cream color notebook with "May, 1920" printed on cover. Provides two lined pages for each day of the month. Excerpts: May 5: 155 [RBS's weight] / Perfect day; calm / Slide visible / Worked at Inc. Tax Decl. in the morning. / The saw mill is busy, the sticks are being stowed in the building north of the ice house which was my shop in the 70s, early 80 and the home of Wright's chickens until Apr.1 '20. / Went to Rhinebeck with Newman to consult Strong on Inc. Tax problems. / Walked home in 48 mins. Some years ago did it in 46', Today I kept to the road but the former turned in Ellerslie East gate & cut across the fields. Probably I made better time today in view of the greater distance. 6: Emptied my desk mostly into my safe & bag. It is to be moved to the new office at 74 Broadway./ Newman gave me his check on Rh. B. for the 3441.16 to pay for the U. S. bonds. 10: Attended Diocesan Convention in p.m. Heard Baker speak standing beside the Bishop. 11: To town in 6:56 (7:56) fr. Pok./ Stopped for a few minutes at the apt. Saw Daisy, grandson, Nettie & Addie. Bessie & Betty were out shopping. They went to Rh. in 2 o'clock with baby./ #Rh.Bk. 5219 Wilderstein electricity bill for April 35.70. / To Diocesan Convention & to Sheltering Arms. At the latter saw the boys as boy scouts. / Dined & slept at Yacht Club. 15: Gov. Morton is 96 today. Mrs. Helen Morton gave a kind of party to the children of the Holiday House.& Ellerslie public school, etc. Bessie & Bettie went to it. / Robbie arr'd in late afternoon. 16: Gov. Morton died today of a sudden attack of pneumonia. 18: Letter from Peg wanting to live in Wildercliff this summer. / Shut off the central heating until next autumn. / Mr. Minot drove in to ask me to take charge of the ushering at the funeral tomorrow. I tried to get Harry & Robbie but the latter had no black clothes & the former had too much to do at the office. Told Robbie to try for Gordon & succeeded. Tried for M. Crosby but he was & will be away. At the Mortons at 7 P.M. saw the Governor laid out on a raised couch, not in a coffin. 19: Called up Gordon on the telephone. Induced him to come act as usher at Gov. Morton's funeral today./ Mr. Eustis telephoned me that they wanted me to be one of the 8 hon. pallbearers to which I consented. I replaced Gerald Hoyt who telegraphed that he was too sick to act. / In church the immediate family sat in the left (north) front seats; We 8 non-pallbearers in the front right pews. We were: Adrian Isilen; Judge Hughes; Elihu Root; [blank] Smith, pres. N.Y. Cen; [blank] Rea. pres. Penn RR; A. Rogers; R. B. Suckley. 21: Mr. Little telephoned that Dr. Goodell died yesterday. Funeral Monday at 2 p.m. Vestry to be pallbearers. / Wrote to House of Rest that Dr. Goodell's funeral would prevent my attendance at meeting on Monday. 22: Letter to Peg Anderson about Wildercliff./ Mrs. Robt. Huntington came in p.m. She gave me a letter recommending a woman for the matronship for the House of Rest. I sent it on to Sect'y Welles./ Robbie arr'd at 9:12, Pok. 24. Bessie & I attended Dr. Goodell's funeral at 2 p.m. All the Vestry attended acting as pallbearers. Even Vincent was on duty. / Bessie & I walked home 1/2 of distance. 25: Letter arr'd from Internal Rev. Agent at New Haven stating that [blank] Inc. Tax of Pok. had [called] on me several times in Jan. to verify my returns & that I had not replied. / Enclosed Gov. envelope for reply. 26: Robbie telephoned that he had closed a 5 yr. lease for 36 W. 83, 3000 & C.W. / Newman trained to Buffalo to bring home the new Studebaker. / Replied to Spalding Rev. agent at New Haven stating that I was abroad & could not get home in time to make Return Mar. 15. That Newman knew nothing about any agent nor have I found any notification from any inspector. Asked him to give me a rest from Inc.Tax matters for a time. 31: Decoration Day. / Out to Homestead with H.E.M./ In P.M. Robbie left in 1:37 (2:37). / Bettie & baby, H.E.M. & I to the horse races at R./ H.E.M. left for N.Y. in 5:07 (6:07.) |
