Twenty-one letters from Maine; Rhinebeck; New York City; Baltimore, MD; Watkins Glen, NY; Robin wirtes of automobles, engines, investments, social life; his expenses [letter #1] July 31. Robin & Arthur are in Bar Harbor, Maine, palying tennis and socializing with Madeline Astor and Kitty Hamersley. [#3] Mar 5, 1914. Arthur, Nummie & Robin pay half the $300 rent on apt. at 43 Fifth Ave., Mama the other half. "Mama gets a beautiful room on the 6th floor of a beautiful apartment house on 5th Avenue, a marble bathroom that she shares with only one other person, myself; two large sitting rooms with a grand piano, our oun Rhinebeck vegetables, and our own Rhinebeck butter. We haven't engaged any extra servants, and Celine remains at Rhinebeck with enough servants to keep the establishment running as you wished." [#6] By July 9, they are no longer in the apartment and Robin wants to rent a house between Madison & Park. [#7] July 23, 1914. Would like to keep a horse at Wilderstein. [#9] Aug 3, 1914. Can't recover at Wilderstein from operation to remove appendix & break 20 year old adhesions. Currently taking the waters at The Glen Springs, Watkins Glen, NY. Oct 1914: Staying at Hotel Carle, Waverly Place, NYC Oct 31,1914: Incensed because Nummie has suggested that some profit from speculation be sent to Papa to pay the family expenses. The support of Wilderstein "proved itself a millstone on the family neck nearly twenty years ago, and seems to be doing so now more than ever." Continual explanation of his expenses and requests for money. |
