Small light gray notebook with "July, 1909" printed on cover provides two lined pages for each day of the month. 1909 JULY 02, Fri: "Boat race at Po'keepsie. Cornell won. Bessie & the twins saw the race from a dock on E. side, below Insane Asylum, seated in the auto. H.M.S. was on the observation train with Mansie Crosby. Daisy, Robbie & Arthur were guests of Col. Astor on his electric yacht crossing the river from Pokeepsie - on the observation train & to our dock in his launch, arriving here about 8 p.m. / Gave Newman 1 for his lunch. On returning from Pok. the fan of the new Ford broke in pieces doing some harm to the radiator & causing it to leak. He got home however." 03, Sat: "Gave Arthur 20. Sent him to town in 9:18 to get an outer tube for old Ford. / Robbie lunched chez Merritt's. / Nummie & Robbie went to Pok in P. M. taking 20 h.p. Ford radiator, to have it fixed if possible or to have the agents Delamalie [?] send it to the company." 04, Sun: All family to church except Nummie, Robbie and RBS. / Sent Arthur for a casing for the old Ford. /"H.M.S. dined chez Crosbys. / Col. & Vincent Astor came twice today but would not stop." 05, Mon: "Fireworks at Col. Astor's - ice cream, etc. In electric launch to Kingston Point but we did not land. Vincent took us up & home afterwards in his Franklyn. Nummie & Arthur were in Ford. Bessie & Robin did not go. About 25 there - Chapmans, Aldrich Kipp, Crosby & Merritts. Home about midnight." 09, Fri: "Col. & Vincent Astor came in A. M. to ask us to go to Kingston Point in launch / 3 girls rowed in afternoon. / Daisy & 3 boys dined at Crosby's." 10, Sat: "Lutheran Church in village burnt - almost entirely." 11, Sun: "A large deer came quite near the house. Fiasac pursued it. / 3 boys spent afternoon at Merritt's." 12, Mon: "H.M.S. lunched at Merritt's." / P.Cards to Dobbs, Alioth, Beauclerk & L_ M R." / "To Rhinebeck in 6 - changing at Pok. to local. / Vincent Astor & _ Chapman took supper with us." 15, Thurs: Recd. rent from Mrs. Elizabeth McCourt, E. Dutchess Co. farm, "at Dover Plains, I think." 16, Fri: "First outing for launch. Robbie, Arthur & Crosby. Up to Merrits. Storm on return. Crosby supped here. Boys took him home in new Ford. On ret. broke down near home. Walked & towed with old Ford." 19, Mon: "Bessie, Daisy & Elizab. Lynch to Red Hook dentist in A. M. / H.M.S. & Arthur - Merritts in PM & Crosbys supper & evening. / 3 girls swam / Robbie & Fiasac in Ford to Kingston in P.M." 20, Tues: "Cut off upper half of one of the screen willows near fence north of house. This was to ascertain if buds would appear quickly on the lower half. / Boys tennis at Merritts & dinner at Crosby's." 21, Wed: "Wages paid today: Bridget, waitress, 24 per m; Kate, laundress, 18 per m; Annie, cook, 20 per m; Mary, chambmd @22. "Vincent Astor took Daisy out in his auto to Merritt's & return. / Sophie & Helen Langdon arr. at 6." 22, Tues: "After supper Daisy took me for a drive in the little Ford. ½ way between school house & woods Fiasac's efforts to jump out after a passing dog disturbed the steering so much that the machine plunged down hill to right upsetting & hurling me clear but pinning Daisy under seat. I lifted the machine & she crawled out. Little damage to us." 25, Sun: "Everybody to church except Arthur & I. / 3 boys & I in new Ford at 3 to Astors to play tennis & wish them bon voyage. / They left for N. Y. in 5:45 to sail in the Kaiser II on Tuesday. / 20 questions in evening. / Wright: to remove top rail from wire fence on public road - saw off posts nearly to top wire - paint posts very dark." 26, Mon. Nummie left for Mantoloking. 27, Tues: "Girls paid visits to Dows, Elizab. Lynch & Crosbys. / Merritt brother & sister took supper with us. We took them as far as the Astor dock in launch, where their carriage met them. The moonlight on the water was beautiful. Catherine developed a high fever 104 ¼ in evening." [Catherine's fever continued through Aug. 11. Doctor almost certain the disease is typhoid. She went downstairs for first time on Aug. 25, having lost 15 pounds.] 29, Thurs: "Arthur & I slept on piazza in hammocks all night." |
