Correspondence : John Hart Suckley, 1853-1864 1. 3 April 1853 : short note that he will not be home in the evening but will meet George on the 4th of April. 2. 24 August 1853 : describes joy of listening to raindrops on roof, declined invite to go to Cooper's because he was at office until 11pm the previous evening. Fire at Pearl Street house jeopardized Uncle Rutsen's stores, though they escaped unhurt. 3. 15 July 1856 : complains of not receiving word from George in California, also mentions article about George that he read in the "Commercial Advertiser." Informs about his engagement to Miss Rosette Morton, whose father approved but thought that they were too young, and asked them to wait before consummating the engagement. 4. 8 March 1858 : sends along news received from George, family and personal news. 5. 2 October 1858 : Rosy needed a wet nurse for their first-born child because she had symptoms of a gathered breast. The woman they hired is very cleanly. They are naming the baby Caroline, who is a well behaved baby. Asks Mary to be her Godmother when she is christened. George started for Washington. 6. 13 September 1859 : describes night spent on a yacht, Caroline's first few teeth and growth, his pride in his baby girl. 7. 6 November 1859 : Passes along news of George's illness, wishes that George would return home safely and then not leave again, expresses sorrow at the death of Mr. Schuyler, discusses the "hurried" marriage of Mr. H. Freeman. 8. 12 May 1860: If his aunt dines late, he & Rosy will come up. 9. 18 December 1864 : informs that George wishes to have some of Uncle's cider, supposes that George is "with the fleet threatening Charleston or Savannah." 10. 2 September 1856, New York: To "Dear Aunt Mary", about letters from George, one which "Ma requested me to return it to her as soon as you had read it." Comments on Mary's advice about using tooth powders. Delightful eather. Note from Phebe. End of letter missing. |
