Description |
A Fine Napoleon III Gilt Brass Mounted Rosewood, Walnut and Floral Marquetry Lady's Writing Desk. Labels of H. B. Hertz, 242 fifth Ave., New York, Circa 1850-65. In two parts: the upper with a pierced gilt brass gallery above a brass mounted cupboard section with two hinged doors inlaid with flower-filled urns and with gilt bronze mounts above two floral marquetry inlaid small drawers; the flanking stiles with line inlaid and gilt bronze scroll-and-leaf chased mounts; the lower section with a hinged foldover writing slide ornamented with classical gilt bronze nesting birds with elaborate floral marquetry surround and opening to a baize lined writing surface with pen tray and ink wells above a floral marquetry inlaid long drawer and inlaid oblong dies with a gilt bronze molded border; on cylinder-and-wheel turned and tapered fluted supports with gilt bronze mounts above a scrolled flat stretcher centring a gilt bronze mounted central panel; the whole ending in toupie feet. |
