Mary Morton Miller, a Livingston family descendent and widow of wealthy New York City businessman William Starr Miller, purchased The Grove in the 1850s. Miller died in 1881 and The Grove passed on to her nephew, Dr. George R. Miller. In 1896, displaying a philanthropic attitude similar to his aunt, Dr. Miller joined Robert Suckley of Wilderstein to donate a parcel of land at the corner of Montgomery and Chestnut streets in the village for the construction of the Church of the Messiah. Miller and Suckley were vestrymen in the congregation. |
